Last week we read books about wetland food chains and different types of wetlands. We continued end-of-the-year assessments for reading. For writing, students completed a variety of activities. They completed timelines of the natural history of the B Street wetland. They water-colored illustrations to go with the poems they finished last week. They also began a short writing assignment that will help me assess how they have each grown as a writer.
On Thursday afternoon we went to Fernhill Wetland to learn more about wetland birds and animals. Children learned about beaver and mason bee habitats with a Fernhill Wetland's instructor. They also learned about birds with Chris Templeton, Mara's dad, who is an ornithologist at Pacific University. He helped them identify birds by shape, color and sound. He set up a telescope to use for viewing birds up close and gave them bird identification cards and checklists to keep track of the birds they saw. The next day in class students were able to generate a list of more than 10 birds they had identified at Fernhill!
In math, second graders began to learn that multiplication is the same as repeatedly adding equal groups. They also worked on end-of-the-year assessments. Second graders can complete any homework through module 6, lesson 2. First graders continued to work with the place value in two-digit numbers. First graders can complete all homework through module 4, lesson 6.
